HOME SCHOOL SUPPORT AT THE ACADEMY OF CUXTON SCHOOLS

Let me introduce myself to you as the Home School Support Worker at The Academy of Cuxton Schools.  My name is Michelle Kagan and I am here to support all of the children and their families in the school.

As well as supporting and working with Every Child Matters, let me tell you a little more about my role and what I do in school.

What does the Home School Support Worker at Cuxton do?

Here are some of the tasks and responsibilities that I have:

  • Act as a link between home and school including making home visits.
  • Offer a range of services to children and families requiring support and information.
  • Help children and families to increase school attendance and minimise absences.
  • Work with children on a 1:1 or small group basis for a variety of reasons.
  • Talk with and support children in school and encourage them to be positive about their future.
  • Support parents to develop and maintain a positive relationship with the school.
  • Mentoring pupils when needed.
  • Arrange Triple  P Parenting programmes when help is needed for parents.
  • Go through the Common Assessment Framework (CAF) process to get external agencies involved when support is needed.
  • Attend paediatric appointments to support families when necessary.
  • Transition programmes across the school and also transfer to secondary/grammar schools for any child that may need the support.
  • Make referrals to external agencies to support children and families and liaise with the professionals.

What concerns do I deal with?

I am here to support children and families/carers with a wide range of issues and concerns.  A few examples have been listed below:

  • Lack of confidence and low self-esteem
  • Anger Management
  • Emotional First Aid
  • Relationship issues
  • Home circumstances
  • Home-School relationships
  • Behavioural problems

I know children achieve more when both home and school are working in partnership to support the child’s development.  My aim is to encourage and maintain a strong, positive partnership between home and school.  I help with many worries or concerns our parents or children may have, however large or small.

We all have days when we worry about things; we can’t pay the mortgage, having trouble at work, family illness etc. These are big worries.  When children have issues and fall out with their friends, other children are being nasty, or there is an upset at home, these can be just as big worries for them. This is where I can help.  I can offer advice, someone to talk things over with, someone to listen, or someone to simply be there when you need it.

I am not saying that I have all the answers!  But I may be able to get the help that is needed for families when needed.  If you have any concerns however minor they may seem then please come and see me and I will see what I can do for help.
