The Academy of Cuxton Schools Computing Policy

The use of computers and computer systems is an integral part of the National Curriculum and knowing how they work is a life skill. In an increasingly digital world, there now exists a wealth of software, tools and technologies that can be used to communicate, collaborate, express ideas and create digital content. At The Academy of Cuxton Schools, we recognise that pupils are entitles to a broad and balanced computing education with a structured, progressive approach to learning how computer systems  work, the use of IT and the skills necessary to become digitally literate and participate fully in the modern world.

Rationale

The Academy of Cuxton Schools believes that IT, computer science and digital literacy:

  • are essential life skills necessary to fully participate in the modern digital world
  • allows children to become creators of digital content rather than simply consumers of it
  • provides access to a rich and varied source of information and content
  • communicates and presents information in new ways, which helps pupils understand, access and use it more readily
  • can motivate and enthuse pupils
  • offers opportunities for communication and collaboration through group working both inside and outside of school
  • has the flexibility to meet the individual needs and abilities of each pupil

Aims

The Academy of Cuxton School aims to:

  • Provide a broad, balanced, challenging and enjoyable curriculum for all pupils.
  • Develop pupil’s computational thinking skills that will benefit them throughout their lives.
  • Meet the requirements of the National Curriculum programmes of study for computing at Key Stages 1 and 2.
  • Meet the Information Communication Technology requirements stated in the Knowledge and Understanding of the Wold element of the Early Learning Goals Foundation Curriculum
  • To respond to new developments in technology.
  • To equip pupils with the confidence and skills to use digital tools and technologies throughout their lives.
  • To enhance and enrich learning in other areas of the curriculum using IT and computing.
  • To develop the understanding of how to use computers and digital tools safely and responsibly.

Objectives

It is important in the Foundation Stage to give children a broad, play-based experience of IT and computing in a range of contexts, including off-computer activities and outdoor play.

Computing is not just about computers. Early Years learning environments should feature IT scenarios based on experience in the real world, such as in role play. Children gain confidence, control and language skills through opportunities such as ‘programming’ each other using directional language to find toys/objects, creating artwork using digital drawing tools and controlling programmable toys.

Outdoor exploration is an important aspect and using digital recording devices such as video recorders, cameras and microphones can support children in developing communication skills. This is particularly beneficial for children who have English as an additional language.

The New National Curriculum states that pupils in Key Stage One and Key Stage Two should be taught to:

Computer Science

  • Understand what algorithms are; how they are implemented as programs on digital devices; and that programs execute by following precise and unambiguous instructions
  • Create and debug simple programs
  • Use logical reasoning to predict the behaviour of simple programs
  • Design, write and debug programs that accomplish specific goals, including controlling or simulating physical systems; solve problems by decomposing them into smaller parts
  • Use sequence, selection, and repetition in programs; work with variables and various forms of input and output
  • Use logical reasoning to explain how some simple algorithms work and to detect and correct errors in algorithms and programs
  • Understand computer networks including the internet; how they can provide multiple services, such as the World Wide Web
  • Appreciate how search results are selected and ranked

Information Technology

  • Use technology purposefully to create, organise, store, manipulate and retrieve digital content
  • Use search technologies effectively
  • Select, use and combine a variety of software (including internet services) on a range of digital devices to design and create a range of programs, systems and content that accomplish given goals, including collecting, analysing, evaluating and presenting data and information

Digital Literacy

  • Recognise common uses of information technology beyond school
  • Use technology safely and respectfully, keeping personal information private; identify where to go for help and support when they have concerns about content or contact on the internet or other online technologies
  • Understand the opportunities (networks) offer for communication and collaboration
  • Be discerning in evaluating digital content
  • Use technology safely, respectfully and responsibly; recognise acceptable/unacceptable behaviour; identify  a range of ways to report concerns about content and contact

Resources and Access

The newly built computer suite will be used to enable pupils to access the Computing curriculum, along with a range of other resources such as iPads and programmable toys. Resources, if not classroom based, are located in the computing suite. Class Teachers are responsible for ensuring resources are returned and stored away correctly after use. A service level agreement with Bc-Tec is currently in place to support the subject leader in the organization and upkeep of hardware and software. Computing network infrastructure and equipment has been sited so that:

  • Every classroom has a computer connected to the school network and an interactive whiteboard with sound, DVD and video facilities
  • There is a computing suite with 30 desktop computers
  • Internet access is available in all classrooms
  • Each class has one allocated slot per week for teaching computing as a discrete subject in the computing suite
  • The computing suite is available for use throughout the school day as part of computing lessons and for cross-curricular use
  • Pupils may use IT and computing independently, in pairs, alongside a TA or in a group with a teacher
