Find out about brave volunteers and young Miss Darling, rowing her boat across stormy seas. Sing a sea shanty whilst cleaning the poop deck then search the school grounds for Captain Blackbeard's hidden treasure! Thar's land ahead, me hearties! Let's get t'ship t'port!
What will we be learning about this term?
Welcome to Year 2! Birch Class have settled well into their new classroom and are enjoying making new friends. This week we have been learning about the place value of digits in 2-digit numbers. We worked systematically to find all the numbers we could make using different numbers of counters in a tens and ones grid.
In history we learnt about how boats looked in the past and how they were powered. We looked at the different features and their names. We also looked at modern cruise ships and how different they are to ships like the Titanic. We put the ships into a timeline using our understanding of chronological order. Finally, we chose our favourite ship and sketched it in our art books.
This week we went to Forest School for the first time. Lots had changed since we visited last year! We got straight to work building dens, making mud cakes, hunting for creepy-crawlies and painting trees with our muddy mixture. Next week we are looking forward to climbing trees!
Week 3 - Talk Like a Pirate Day!
Avast ye! Listen up you landlubbers, the pirates are in town....arrrrrr!
The year 2 children disappeared on Friday and pirates came to school instead! We learnt how to speak like a pirate and ordered rotten fish, rotten veg and grog for lunch (just kidding, we really had fish-fingers, chips and beans!) We discovered our pirate names (Fancy-Pants Squid Legs for me), had sword fights, walked the plank and made pirate parrot pals to decorate our classroom.
Week 4 - A very wet Forest School!
Splish, splash! Birch Class embraced the seasonal British weather and made the most of a rainy day by jumping in the biggest puddles the playground had to offer! We were ALL soaked! It was a fantastic morning though filled with many happy moments!
Week 4 - Spanish Day
Hola amigos! We celebrated the European Day of Languages by having our very own Spanish Day. The children looked wonderful dressed in the colours of the Spanish flag, Flamenco dresses and Spanish football kits. We learnt the colours in Spanish and made our own shakers.
Week 4 - Role Play
We have been busy in English this week planning prequels for the story 'The Pirates Next Door by Johnny Duddle'. We are REALLY enjoying the story and have had lots of good discussion exploring the story. On Friday we planned a role play in small groups to explain how Grandpa lost his hand! Lots of our role plays revolved around Grandpa stealing the King's puppy!
Week 5 - Maths
On Monday we were busy mathematicians learning about how related facts can really help us with our maths work. We learnt that if we know 4 + 3 = 7, then we know that 40 + 30 = 70 and that 400 + 300 = 700!
Week 5 - Forest School Fun
We ventured up to Forest School for a slightly drier experience than last time - phew! We had lots of fun making 'chocolate cheesecake', building dens, rolling tyres down the hill, sailing our pirate ship and playing with water.
