Reading Books
At the Academy of Cuxton, all children are given access to reading books that they can take home to support them in becoming fluent readers.
From EYFS and throughout KS1, children will be give a Little Wandle book in line with their phonics learning. Children will also bring home a sharing book to explore – this will more than likely require some support to fully access.
In KS2, if children have been identified as a fluent reader, they will access books from a banded system. Both LKS2 and UKS2 have books banded based of age appropriateness and challenge level. Children are always welcome to read from a lower band if a book interests them, however will usually be directed to their age appropriate bands when searching for a book. Children will not be encouraged to read from higher bands, as there may be more grown up themes and content that has been deemed suitable for a higher age group.
If children are not identified as a fluent reader in KS2, they will continue with the Little Wandle scheme to ensure the appropriate support is provided. They will continue to access sharing books which will also be brought home, but again, may require some support to fully access.
The expectation throughout the entire school is that children will read on a daily basis, with a minimum of 3 home reads being logged via the Boomreader App each week. The question stem document below has been designed to support you in discussing your children’s reading and further support their development as co-educators.
