'Foundations for...Historians'

![]()

At the Academy of Cuxton Schools, we aim to stimulate the children’s curiosity and understanding about the knowledge of Britain’s past and that of the wider world, through the encouragement of posing their own historical questions and thinking critically about the subject.
We work to develop an understanding of chronology as well as a perception and awareness of how the local area has changed over time.
We want our pupils to understand the complexities of people’s lives, the process of change, the diversity of societies and relationships between different groups, as well as their own identity and the challenges of their time.
Our bespoke history curriculum is enhanced through our themed events such as Black History month, visitors, use of artefacts, day trips and drama.

Year 1
Year 1 have been exploring the history of Rosa Parks (1913–2005) she was an American civil rights activist known as the "mother of the modern-day civil rights movement". She was best known for her 1955 act of defiance in Montgomery, Alabama, when she refused to give up her bus seat to a white man, sparking the Montgomery Bus Boycott. The children re-acted the bus scene during LOTC, along with ordering her biography in small groups.
Year 2
Year 2 had a trip to the Historic Dockyards in Chatham. They made rope in the longest roper in England, and learnt all about pirates as per their topic. Ooo Arrh!!!
Year 3
Year 3 had a fun time during their Stone Age workshop. They learnt all about human evolution through the Stone Age along with touching artefacts.
Year 4
Year 4 had a fun 1066 day, where they made things out of natural materials as their Anglo-Saxon counterparts would have done. They had fun dressing up too. They also enjoyed preforming Beowulf in their class assembly.
Year 5
Year 6
Year 6 had a festive trip to Rochester to visit Eastgate House to learn all about the Victorians and Charles Dickens. They explored the house and immersed themselves into a Christmas carol experience. It is fantastic that the children have history on their doorstep.
The Titanic scene was built out of Lego during OPAL by some Year 6 children - what fantastic imaginative play following from their History learning in class..
Remembrance Day
At Cuxton, we always like to remember the fallen, and the sacrifices that men and women have made for this country to give us the freedoms we have today. Even Basecamp created a poppy wreath - purple to represent the animals during WWII.
