Within the EYFS, children regularly use maths and practise mathematical concepts in their play. We want mathematical opportunities to be as practical as possible so they really master number, shape, space and measure. Count everything with your child, ask them to add 1 more, take away one, can they recognise numbers in their environment, can they notice, recognise and describe shapes around them. Can they double and half quantities, use language to describe length, weight and capacity e.g. longer, shortest, lightest, full, half full etc. Ask them to explain how they know it is the answer, ask them why they think that so they explain their thinking.
