Physical Education
'Foundations for...Sport'
It is our intent for the Physical Education curriculum to stimulate and motivate all pupils to enjoy, succeed and excel in personal development, competitive sport and other physically demanding activities. We will provide opportunities for pupils to become physically confident in a way which supports their personal health and fitness. Our children will be given the chance to compete in sport and other activities to build character and to embed core values such as fairness, tolerance and mutual respect of others which are needed in today’s society. We will strive to ensure that all children exceed their potential and the impact of our PE curriculum will encourage our children to proceed and live a healthy and active lifestyle.
Our PE lessons are underpinned by our school values of CARE – Community, Adventure, Resilience, and Excellence – which are embedded throughout our physical education provision:
Community – working together, supporting teammates, and encouraging others.
Adventure – trying new sports, exploring movement, and embracing challenge.
Resilience – developing perseverance, learning from setbacks, and striving to improve.
Excellence – aiming high, celebrating achievements, and taking pride in progress.
Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS)
In EYFS, children begin to explore how their bodies move and develop physical control and coordination. Through activities such as yoga, gymnastics, and simple ball skills, they build strength, balance, and confidence. We encourage a love of movement and embed healthy habits early on. Our youngest learners also begin to demonstrate CARE values—like community through sharing equipment and resilience when mastering new skills.
To celebrate their progress, we hold a dedicated Nursery Sports Day, separate from the main event. Nursery children are invited to come in—even on days they wouldn’t normally attend—to take part in fun races and physical challenges. Every child receives a small medal in recognition of their effort and participation.
Key Stage 1
In Key Stage 1, pupils continue to build on their fundamental movement skills—agility, balance, and coordination—and become more confident across a broader range of activities. They engage in individual and group games, basic gymnastics, and simple team-based challenges. Our curriculum helps them understand fairness and respect, while continuing to develop CARE values like adventure (trying new games) and excellence (reflecting on how they move and improve).
Key Stage 1 and EYFS pupils also take part in a Sports Day, which focuses on fun, skill-based stations. During this event, our oldest pupils act as positive role models by supporting and guiding younger children through the different activities—promoting a real sense of community and school-wide collaboration.
Key Stage 2
In Key Stage 2, children continue to develop and refine their physical skills through increasingly complex and competitive activities. They participate in games, gymnastics, dance, athletics, and outdoor adventurous activities, while continuing to build communication and teamwork. Children are encouraged to apply strategies, take on leadership roles, and evaluate their own performance.
All Year 4 pupils take part in swimming lessons taught by qualified instructors. They learn to swim confidently, develop stroke technique, and gain essential water safety and self-rescue skills. In Year 6, pupils will also complete a refresher swimming course to boost their confidence and ensure they are well-prepared before moving on to secondary school.
Key Stage 2 pupils participate in a more challenging Sports Day, which includes track events, team competitions, and skill-based challenges designed to promote resilience, excellence, and healthy competition.
At Cuxton, PE is much more than physical activity—it's a vital part of our curriculum that shapes confident, motivated, and well-rounded learners who understand the importance of healthy living and character development. Through every lesson, game, and event, we live out our CARE values and celebrate every child’s progress and achievement.

PE AMBASSADORS:
As part of our aim to inspire and motivate our pupils, we have elected PE Ambassadors who are able to have a say in what and how PE is performed in school. Their roles are in addition to the national curriculum and help the teachers ensure the activities that we take part in are what the children want to see within their own PE education. In addition to this, the ambassadors support and help run Sports day. This is a great opportunity for the children to have a voice within their own PE education.
Extra- curricular opportunities
Pupils have the opportunity to attend after school clubs to promote and cater for pupils who have a particular interest in a sporting activity e.g. football or multi-skills. Outside providers contribute to this. There is also opportunity for children to participate in before school or lunchtime clubs. To sign up for clubs please check your emails and complete the attached form
